Allan Line steamship built 1871 at Greenock by Robert Steele Co. The Sarmatian was used for transatlantic conveyance of emigrants from 1871 till about 1904. She mainly sailed between Liverpool and Canadian ports via Londonderry. She had accommodation a large number of steerage passengers. On this image she is seen as she appeared towards the end of her career with only two masts, probably from 1890 when the ship was refitted. This image is from an old postcard. The quality of the image is not that of a real photograph, due to limitations in the printing technique at the time of production. However, it is a scarce image to come across.
