Allan Line steamship built 1871 at Greenock by Robert Steele Co. The Sarmatian was used for transatlantic conveyance of emigrants from 1871 till about 1904. On this image she is seen as she originally appeared after she was launched with 3 masts and sails. The ships was refitted in 1890, and that is probably when the third mast was removed. She mainly sailed between Liverpool and Canadian ports via Londonderry. She had accommodation a large number of steerage passengers. This image is from an old engraving, the original measures ca. 23 x 12 cm. For more ship history see: S/S Sarmatian
