Alfonso XII (3) - ex Havel

Spanish Line steamship built 1890 at Stettin by AG Vulcan as the "Havel" for the Norddeutscher Lloyd. Purchased by the Spanish government and renamed "Meteoro" 1898 for use as armed cruiser in the Spanish-American War. The vessel became part of Gruppo E of the Reserve Squadron but saw no action during the war. Purchased by Cia Trasatlantica 1899 and renamed "Alfonso XII". This image is from an old postcard.
