Olaf - ex Patten

This image shows the Norwegian ship Olaf departing with emigrants from Christiania (Oslo) for Quebec in 1866. The ship was towed out the Christiania fjord by the steam-tug "Pluggen", which as also used as an ice breaker during the winter. The Superior was built 1848 at Richmond, Maine, U.S.A by Patten & Stunderant. The original engraving measures ca. 23 x 14 cm. and was printed in the Norwegian magazine "Norsk Folkeblad" 1866. The magazine was edited by the famous Norwegian poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. For more ship history see: Olaf
