American Line steamship built 1881 at Belfast by Harland & Wolff. The British King was one of 5 identical sisters originally built for the British Shipowners Co. This ship was mainly used for the conveyance of emigrants and other passengers on the route between Liverpool and Philadelphia. In 1889 she was sold to the Holland America Line and was renamed "Werkendam". This image is from an old photograph. For more ship history see: S/S British King
