White Star Line steamship built 1881 at Belfast by Harland & Wolff. The Coptic was chartered to the Occidental & Oriental Co. for their San Francisco - Yokohama - Hong Kong service. This image is from an old photograph and shows the ship just after her forward whaleback had been totally wrecked in a typhoon a few days after departing San Francisco in February 1898. This image is taken from the bow looking back at the temporary repairs and the gaping hole in the deck where the forward whaleback was. For more ship history see: S/S Coptic
