White Star Line steamship built 1881 at Belfast by Harland & Wolff. The Coptic was chartered to the Occidental & Oriental Co. for their San Francisco - Yokohama - Hong Kong service. This image is from an old photograph and shows the ship just after her forward whaleback had been totally wrecked in a typhoon a few days after departing San Francisco for the Orient in February 1898. Captain Inman Selaby is seen standing on the deck giving orders. For more ship history see: S/S Coptic
