Sandy Hook Lightship

This image shows lightship number 20 located at the barrier spit which encloses the southern entrance of Lower New York Bay south of New York City. This was a feared area among the captains of the emigrant ships, as it was easy to run aground on this narrow and sandy peninsula in bad weather. The image is from an old view book printed about 1885. The original print is about 10 x 6 cm in size.
